Effects of Typhoon Kong-rey

After yesterday’s rainy opening ceremony, it was clear that the effects of Typhoon Kong-rey would linger, with wet and windy weather expected throughout the day. Early forecasts all agreed that heavy rain and gusty winds would persist, possibly easing to moderate rain by mid-afternoon. The team members in early heats gathered at the track for a 9 a.m. start, only to find the track soaked and unsafe, with standing water and strong winds complicating matters.

Adapted Plans and Video System Testing

An impromptu team managers’ meeting was held, and we collectively decided to delay racing until later in the day, with an hour’s notice to return. During this downtime, the video system team tested an alternative setup that allowed pilots to connect their FPV goggles to antennas located closer to the track, aiming to improve video reception and reduce signal issues encountered at the track’s far end. The team used this break to rest, explore nearby areas, and recharge for the afternoon.

By 4 p.m., we received word to head back to the stadium. While rain had subsided slightly to a steady drizzle, the track required further testing for video signal improvements, which delayed the start. Racing finally resumed at 6 p.m., with pilots grouped into heats of five. With only time for one qualifying round before the venue closed at 9:30 p.m., each pilot needed to make the most of this first chance.

Qualifying Round Results

  • Dan Miles – 2 laps, 100.42 seconds
Dan managed to complete two laps despite the difficult video conditions and was pleased with his times.
  • Joshua Stevens – 1 lap, 60.8 seconds
Joshua encountered signal issues, leading to an early crash. However, he felt positive about getting familiar with the track layout.
  • Dan Carbis – 0 laps
Dan faced an unexpected challenge with his drone’s placement on the start block, which caused it to slip upon arming. Unfortunately, this prevented him from completing a lap this round.
  • Owen Knight – 2 laps, 93.3 seconds
Owen completed two strong laps before a minor mistake on his third. Surprisingly, his video signal held up reasonably well.

Looking Ahead

Video reception remains a critical factor for all pilots, with ongoing discussions around potential fixes in the pit area. As we head into Saturday for the final 2 qualification rounds and the start of the elimination rounds, forecasts suggest a much-needed break from the rain, with sunny weather and warmer temperatures expected.

Thanks again for your support and encouragement—we look forward to sharing more updates soon!

Warm regards,
Karl Payne – Team Manager
