Day 4 was cancelled due to rain and wind. So we went off to Flensburg for a wonder about. Later that evening, the local that is hosting the Championships, held a BBQ at the field for all of us. It was a lot of fun. There was even a large scale freestyle and incredible 3D heli flying display put on for us.
Day 5 started off very calm for 3 junior groups. But by the time they were done, the wind had started to pick up considerably for the start of the senior rounds. By lunch time, it was close to the limit (8m/s) and we were all using the maximum ballast we had. It was a difficult day, but Gavin maintained his position and Corne and I managed to move up a bit.
The highlight of the day was Corne’s round 13. Task was Last 2 flights, 4mins maximum.
Group 3 – Corne
100g ballast, 355g all up weight.
Corne flew amazingly well in this round.
He waited a few seconds to see what the air was doing. As soon as he saw a couple of gliders circle downwind to the SW, launched and chased. He found lift and worked it hard, having to recenter many times, going quite far downwind and climbed pretty high. Came back easily from high for the 4mins.
Held the glider for just over a minute, observing the air. Saw something to the South over the tents, launched and chased it. He found lift quite quickly. It was lighter than the lift in the first flight. He climbed, but was drifting a long way downwind. He lost the lift for a bit and instead of heading back, he went further downwind! And he found more lift. By now he was a looong way away. He eventually started heading back and made it to the field for another 4min flight and 1000pts!!
